The old 60gb and old 80gb had hardware compatibility.

The newer non-slim 80gb models don't have it. I got one Christmas '08 just a couple of months after they took it out (as I found out after the fact).

You have to find one manufactured at least before then.

Actually it was the old 20 and 60 who had the Emulation Chip.
The first 80 gb's and the 60 gb's who were made at the same time had only software emulation and every new model afterwards had no Emulation.
